As we have been learning about music, we thought it was really important to learn about music specific to Uruguay in order to know more about our own roots!
The first thing we did was to listen to a song, without knowing the style, song title or where it was from. We had to write down everything that we could hear, for example, the types of sounds, instruments, voices and rhythms.
Then we had to make connections and explain what we thought was happening in the song. We made these connections by using what we could hear, as evidence.
We then wondered what could be happening in the song, who the musicians were, and where they could be playing. We had many hypotheses that differed. Luckily, we had an expert come and tell us exactly what was the story behind these rythms!
Flavia dances in a comparsa and was able to share with us all her knowledge about the evolution of candombe in Uruguay. She brought in some costumes used in ‘Las Llamadas’ by her and by her husband. To end with, Flavia showed us some candombe dance steps and we attempted to copy!! We were amazed!
Thank you, Flavia, for taking the time to share with us!
